  (6)Thesecondpifallisaformofrelativismborneoutofalackofconfidenceintheveryexistenceoftruth.Itdevelopswhenscienceisdivorcedfrommethodandviewedasjustanotherclaiminthemarketplaceofideas.APewResearchstudyshowsthat35percentofAmericansthinkthescientificmethodcanbeusedtoproduce“anyresultaresearcherwants."Oncethescientificapproachhasbeendelegitimized,thenallhypotheses,includingthemostoutlandishandirrationalones,canbetakenascredible.So,hiddeninthisconceitofademocratic“marketplaceofideas"isaparticularlyvirulentformofrelativismthatapproachesnihilism.
